I DO NOT UNDERSTAND

AMELIA HOPE BURROWS

I do not understand when you say the word ‘no’.

It always sounds the same      it comes out quick and fast.

It’s always a firm ‘no’ with force.

Does it mean that you hate me?

Or that you don’t want to play with me?

I do not understand when you say the word ‘no’.

The word separates us            it’s like we’re paper and ‘no’ is the scissors slicing us.

We divide into two parts, me over here          you over there.
It feels so lonely and raw        like I’m all alone on the floor.

Could I shout across the room to you?                       No, I will not.

Will he respond to me?           No, he will not.
